To forgive or not to forgive, that is not the question, but if we know what forgiveness is. We seek its meaning by placing ourselves at the two ends of a line. At one end we seek forgiveness, and at the other end we grant it. These ends give us an illusion of grasping the realities lying between. This illusion enables us to give only what we seek ourselves, and not what others seek.
Forgiveness is letting go. Releasing the hardened grip either encasing hurt or shielding a fragment of heart from it.
Forgiveness can be magnanimous and cathartic. But it can also be selfish, and even suffocating, if we continue seeking it from one who fails to discover the line itself, including oneself.
